The Adamawa State Government’s demolition of illegal structures at the Jimeta Ultra-Modern Market has triggered mixed reactions among traders and residents.

The demolition, which began on Tuesday, followed a directive from Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, conveyed in a letter dated September 12, 2025, by the Adamawa State Urban & Regional Planning Board (ASUPDA). The government accused some traders of erecting unauthorized “temporary shops” that blocked access roads and distorted the market’s master plan.

Shop owners and buyers were seen in visible distress, with divided opinions on the government’s action.

Some traders like Abubakar Sa’ad and Salomi Charles condemned the move, saying they were not given sufficient time to find alternatives. They described the demolition as harsh, especially amid prevailing economic hardships, and appealed to the government to provide them with new trading spaces.

Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Dr. Ishaya John Dabari, defended the demolition, stressing it was necessary to restore the market to its original design. He said only traders who illegally erected shops were affected, and no compensation was paid.

“Because of the demolition, both traders and the government have lost revenue. But this action will help restore order and enhance sustainable revenue generation in the future,” Dabari stated.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Restoration Committee and Director of the State Urban & Regional Planning Board, T.P. John Zutuwa, disclosed that over 2,000 illegal structures had already been demolished, with more still to be removed.

“All developments not in conformity with the master plan must go,” Zutuwa declared.
