There won’t be blackout in four Nigerian states from next year – AEDC

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has vowed to reduce blackout and electricity interruption in Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Nassarawa states, respectively, from next year, 2027.

The Chief Executive of AEDC, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, made this known at an engagement in Abuja on Thursday.

This comes as the Disco attributed nationwide drop in power supply due to reduced allocation from the nationwide supply due to seasonal challenges.

He noted that the disco would rely on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s 350-megawatt ongoing gas plant in Gwagwalada to boost electricity supply in Abuja and the environment by either the last quarter of this year or next year.

“We are increasingly power reliable. We are constructing a new feeder to Wuse from the second week of March for customers in Wuse to experience at least 20 hours of power supply. Same with Idu.

“It may sound like a tall order, but it is possible; we have the support of our board, shareholders, and the government. By this time next year, this huge impact in terms of power drop will be a thing of the past.

“By this time next year we will not be affected by the drop in power supply from the National Grid,” he said.

He lamented that energy theft has been a colossal challenge to Discos nationwide, calling on the corporation of electricity users to reduce the menace.

Okwuokenye stressed that there is a need for the country to reconsider the current tariff template to address the liquidity crisis in the power sector.

He added that the disco was able to deploy 70,000 meters under the country’s free meters scheme.
