Three more PDP govs set to quit soon, Fayose predicts mass exodus amid deepening party crisis

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has predicted another wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming that three more sitting governors are preparing to leave the opposition party in the coming days.

Fayose made the revelation on Wednesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, while reacting to the recent resignation of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, from the PDP.

According to the former governor, the party is fast losing its grip on national politics and may soon be left with only five governors as internal strife continues to consume its ranks.

“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. There will be five remaining. The five remaining, one of them will struggle to catch the ticket, and they all know that the ticket is an ordinary tissue paper,” Fayose declared.

He accused several PDP governors of being the architects of the party’s collapse, alleging that their obsession with controlling its structure has led to its steady decline.

“They are largely killing the party because they want to control it. This is what happened in 2023,” he added.

Fayose also dismissed suggestions that President Bola Tinubu has been influencing the defections, arguing instead that most of the governors leaving the PDP are driven by self-interest rather than external coercion.

“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view,” he stated.

The outspoken politician further insisted that the root of the party’s crisis lies in internal sabotage, not external pressure.

“Those who killed the party know themselves. There is a difference between a former governor and a sitting governor,” Fayose said.

Although he remains a registered member of the PDP, Fayose distanced himself from any responsibility for resolving its internal crisis, insisting that the current leadership must take full accountability for the party’s predicament.

With defections mounting and discontent deepening, Fayose’s comments underscore the growing uncertainty within Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
