President Bola Tinubu on Saturday held a private meeting with former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retd.), at the State House in Abuja.
The Presidency confirmed the visit in a brief statement but did not provide details of the discussions.
Over the years, successive Presidents have sought Danjuma’s counsel on critical national issues, reflecting his long-standing influence in military and political affairs as well as his reputation as an elder statesman.
Danjuma served as Minister of Defence during the first term of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003.
At 87, the Taraba State-born retired general remains one of the country’s most prominent figures. He was Chief of Army Staff between 1976 and 1979 under the military administration of Obasanjo and later returned to public service as Defence Minister during the civilian government that began in 1999.
He also played a significant role in Nigeria’s political evolution, notably during the July 1966 counter-coup that ushered General Yakubu Gowon into power.
Outside his military and political engagements, Danjuma is a leading figure in Nigeria’s business community, particularly in the oil and gas industry through his company, South Atlantic Petroleum. He is also widely recognised for his philanthropic work via the TY Danjuma Foundation.

The former Defence Minister has frequently spoken out on national security. In 2018, he stirred widespread debate when he called on citizens to defend themselves against armed assailants, alleging that security agencies were failing to adequately protect vulnerable communities.
