Tinubu orders free healthcare for low-income retirees

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate provision of free healthcare to low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS)

The move is part of efforts by the Federal Government to improve the welfare of Nigerian pensioners.

The president also ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increase and the enforcement of a minimum pension guarantee, aimed at safeguarding the most vulnerable retirees.

The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He described the measures as essential steps to uphold “social protection and dignity in retirement.”

Tinubu’s orders came shortly after a comprehensive briefing at the State House in Abuja by Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the newly appointed Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

During the briefing, President Tinubu also instructed PenCom to urgently resolve the lingering pension challenges affecting retired police officers, many of whom have repeatedly protested across the country over inadequate pensions and deteriorating living conditions.

“Members of the police force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind,” Tinubu emphasised.

The agitation by police retirees has centred around calls to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme, which they argue has failed to meet their post-service needs due to structural irregularities.

In response, Oloworaran assured the president of PenCom’s commitment to addressing the issue and improving overall pension fund performance in light of rising inflation and economic headwinds.

She further outlined upcoming reforms, including the development of platforms to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to pension funds in foreign currencies, a move she said would widen participation and strengthen the system.

Highlighting her reform agenda, the PenCom D-G also stressed ongoing efforts to expand pension coverage and enhance retiree welfare nationwide.

President Tinubu welcomed the initiatives and reiterated his administration’s dedication to inclusive economic growth and the protection of ordinary Nigerians, particularly the elderly and those who served the country faithfully.

The president’s directive marks a significant policy shift toward more humane retirement conditions, and reflects growing national concern about the wellbeing of pensioners, especially those from security services.
