President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his government seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign by March 31.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, disclosed this in a circular issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, on Wednesday in Abuja.
The directive, according to the circular, was in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the polls
It read: “The directive is pursuant to the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
The directive applies to all categories of political appointees in the presidency intending to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices.
“Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions and government-owned companies.
“All affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the office of the SGF on or before the stipulated deadline.
” The measure was necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws, promote transparency and guarantee a level playing field for all aspirants, ” the circular added.
