Tinubu sets up high-level committee for Buhari’s state burial, wike among members

President Bola Tinubu has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the planning and execution of a state burial for late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is tasked with coordinating all arrangements to ensure the former leader receives a dignified and befitting farewell.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the committee is composed of several key ministers and top security officials.

Members include the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Minister of Defence; Minister of Information and National Orientation; Minister of Works; Minister of Interior; Minister of Housing and Urban Development; Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare; and the Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy.

Also included are the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters; the Inspector General of Police; the Director-General of the Department of State Services; and the Chief of Defence Staff.

Imohiosen further stated that the Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will serve as the committee’s secretariat to provide administrative and logistical support.

As part of the mourning period and to facilitate national participation in honouring the late leader, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrances of their offices.

“In honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, President Tinubu has also directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to open condolence registers at the entrance of their respective offices for the public to pay their respects to the late elder statesman,” the statement noted.

Additionally, a central condolence register will be made available for the diplomatic corps and members of the public at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

“Further briefings will follow as the days unfold,” Imohiosen added.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who led Nigeria both as a military ruler (1983–1985) and later as a two-term civilian president (2015–2023), will be laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, in line with Islamic rites.
