Tinubu stabilised Buhari’s failing economy but still lacks a clear fix —SDP’s Adebayo

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has stated that President Bola Tinubu has managed to stabilise the Nigerian economy, which he described as severely mismanaged during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Tuesday, Adebayo compared the economy Buhari left behind to a critically ill patient, crediting Tinubu with keeping it from total collapse, even though a full recovery remains elusive.

“It’s obvious that the economy that President Buhari left was a poorly managed economy, and was an emergency room patient,” Adebayo said.

“What President Tinubu has done is to stabilise the patient, but I’m not sure that he has managed to know the ailment. So the patient is not going to die imminently, but he hasn’t found a cure.”

According to Adebayo, while Tinubu has made some headway in select sectors, he has yet to clearly identify and address the deeper structural issues holding back Nigeria’s economy.

“He hasn’t been able to identify the problem, the ailment that is disturbing the patient,” he said.

“As an emergency room doctor, he is taking some steps, some of it actually aggravated the case of the patient, but over time, he appears to have one or two wins in two sectors.”

The opposition politician also took a swipe at Tinubu’s approach to taxation, calling him “a well-known tax collector,” a reference to Tinubu’s history of tax reforms during his tenure as Lagos State governor and his current federal tax initiatives.

“Everybody knows that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a well-known tax collector. He did tax collection in Lagos and he came to do tax collection in Abuja,” Adebayo said.

In June, Tinubu signed four major tax reform bills into law as part of a broader effort to restructure Nigeria’s complex tax system. The legislation aims to streamline tax collection, reduce burdens on low-income earners and small businesses, and improve overall compliance. The reforms are set to take effect from January 1, 2026.

While Adebayo acknowledged some short-term gains under Tinubu, he insisted that the government must go beyond emergency responses and begin diagnosing and addressing the root causes of Nigeria’s economic distress.
