Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled a large scale midnight attack on Chibok communities in Borno State, stopping more than three hundred terrorists who launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions in the early hours of Saturday.
The attack began at about 2.50 a.m., but soldiers of the 28 Task Force Brigade were already on alert and detected the hostile movement before the insurgents could advance.
The troops quickly took up battle positions and engaged the attackers from several fronts.
A fierce exchange of fire followed for more than two hours as the soldiers held their lines and prevented the terrorists from reaching the communities.
At daybreak, the insurgents began a disorderly withdrawal toward the Azir axis leading into the Sambisa Forest, attempting to cross the Damboa to Biu supply route.
The army immediately tasked 25 Brigade to man pre arranged ambush points around the Azir Bridge to trap the fleeing fighters.
Their movement was monitored with support from a Nigerian Army unmanned aerial vehicle.
The air component of Operation Hadin Kai also deployed a Super Tucano aircraft to reinforce the ground operation.
As troops closed in, the terrorists scattered, and soldiers disrupted their escape. There were no troop casualties or equipment losses.
Exploration operations are continuing around Chibok, and the army says it is intensifying efforts to track all fleeing elements and restrict their movement.
Footage showing the mass withdrawal of the attackers after the failed assault has been secured and is now under analysis for further action.
The Nigerian Army says it remains fully committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and safeguarding all citizens.
