Trump dismisses ground war with Iran as ‘waste of time,’ signals interest in new leadership

U.S President Donald Trump has ruled out the prospect of sending United States ground troops into Iran for now, describing such a move as unnecessary and ineffective despite rising tensions in the region.

Speaking in a telephone interview with NBC News on Thursday, the U.S. president brushed aside warnings from Iran’s foreign minister that a ground invasion by the United States or Israel would end in disaster for any invading force.

“It’s a waste of time. They’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their navy. They’ve lost everything they can lose,” he said.

Trump also dismissed remarks earlier made by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who had declared that Iran was prepared for a potential ground assault by American or Israeli forces.

According to the U.S. leader, the statement from Tehran did not carry much weight.

“It’s a waste of time. They’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their navy. They’ve lost everything they can lose,” he told NBC by telephone, adding that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s earlier remark that Iran was ready for a US or Israeli ground invasion was a “wasted comment.”

Despite ruling out a troop deployment, Trump suggested he wanted sweeping changes to Iran’s current leadership structure following the escalating conflict.

“We don’t want someone who would rebuild over a 10-year period,” he said.

He indicated that Washington would prefer a rapid political transition in Tehran, adding that “we want to go in and clean out everything” quickly.

Trump also disclosed that he already had ideas about who could potentially lead Iran next, although he declined to reveal any names.

Earlier in the week, the president had suggested the United States would play a role in shaping Iran’s future leadership after American and Israeli strikes reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during the opening phase of the conflict on Saturday.

“I would have to be involved,” Trump had said regarding the appointment of Iran’s next leader.

Meanwhile, the fighting showed no signs of easing. Heavy bombardments were reported in Tehran on Friday after Israel announced it had begun targeting what it described as “regime infrastructure” in what officials called a “new phase” of the war launched jointly with the United States against Iran.
