President Donald Trump has sacked Kristi Noem as the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), appointing U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin.

The President, in a post on Truth Social on Thursday, announced that Mullin will become the Secretary of Homeland Security effective March 31, 2026.

Trump said Noem, 54, will become the Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere to be announced on Saturday in Doral, Florida.

48-year-old Mullin, a former undefeated professional MMA fighter, served 10 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and has been in the Senate for three years.

The President noted that the lawmaker gets along well with people and “knows the wisdom and courage” required to advance the America First Agenda.

Trump said being the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne, “a fantastic advocate for tribal communities,” will work to keep the border safe, and stop migrant crime, criminals, and drugs from entering the country.

On Tuesday, Noem was grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee over her spending on aircraft and adverts, and immigration raids, which caused the death of two Americans, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) condemned the fatal shootings, saying “one death is too many.” He, however, noted that officers should never be threatened or harmed while enforcing the laws.

The heads of ICE, CBP, and USCIS, agencies within the DHS, testified before the House and Senate, after an initial report in late January from the oversight arm of CBP countered Noem’s account of Pretti’s death.
