Former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has warned that recent comments by the United States President, Donald Trump pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s unity and peace.
Abdulsalami said Trump’s statement, which described Nigeria as a country of particular concern, could create unnecessary tension and division if not handled carefully.
He described the remark as a grave threat to the country’s hard-won unity.
He urged Nigerians to remain calm and not allow external forces to divide them.
He appealed to citizens to put aside their differences and stand together in defence of the nation’s sovereignty.
“At this critical time, unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride,” he added.
The former leader also called on the United States to support Nigeria’s efforts in tackling insecurity through partnership rather than criticism.
“What Nigeria needs now is cooperation and strategic dialogue, not threats or labels. The U.S. should work with us to strengthen peace and security,” Abdulsalami said.
He emphasized that Nigeria must continue to engage in quiet diplomacy to address any misunderstandings and protect its national interest.
