A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki (SAN) has distanced itself from reports of impending party congresses across the country, describing the claims as fabricated and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Monday, Turaki, who chairs the faction, maintained that no congresses were being organised under his leadership, alleging that expelled party members now aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) were behind the misinformation.
“Our members and the general public are hereby notified that our party is not conducting congresses in any part of the country.
“The false information is being circulated by expelled members of our party, who now have clearly shown their unrelenting appendages to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a bid to kill our party and derail our democracy,” the statement read.
Turaki further accused the affected individuals of trading the party’s future for personal advantage, alleging that some had “mortgaged the fate of our party to the President and the APC, in return for political appointments and other favours.”
He stressed that the party would not “surrender” its structure to actors seeking rapprochement with the ruling party, pointing to the FCT Area Council Elections as an illustration of what he described as unacceptable compromise.
“This disposition is obviously against the principles of multiparty democracy, which is the best option for a heterogeneous and pluralistic society like ours,” Turaki said.
The faction urged members and supporters nationwide to disregard announcements of any planned congresses, clarifying that the PDP’s current priority is a nationwide digital membership registration exercise.

“We therefore urge all our members and the general public to discountenance the said planned congresses in the said states. What the party is currently undertaking is the digital membership registration, which has commenced and is progressing well.”
Turaki concluded with an assurance that members would be kept informed as events unfold, stating, “We will keep our members updated about the developments concomitant with the new political realities unfolding.”
The statement comes amid internal divisions within the PDP. A separate bloc associated with Nyesom Wike has insisted that its national convention scheduled for March 29–30 will proceed despite ongoing litigation.
Meanwhile, the party’s National Caretaker Committee, led by acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, has reportedly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the planned convention. Its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, alongside committee member Okechukwu Osuoha, has maintained that efforts are underway to ensure an inclusive gathering.
However, the Turaki-led faction, said to enjoy the backing of Seyi Makinde, rejected the move, arguing that the bloc linked to the FCT Minister lacks both the legal standing and authority to organise party congresses.
