Real Madrid midfielder, Federico Valverde, has revealed that he rejected Vinicius Jr’s request to take the second-half penalty against Manchester City.

Valverde had already scored a hat-trick in the first half, as Madrid took control of the Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

But in the second half, Los Blancos had the chance to extend their three-goal lead, after Vinicius was brought down by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Brazilian winger offered the spot kick to Valverde, but he refused and the penalty was eventually pushed away by Donnarumma.

Valverde told TNT Sports: “Vini Jr asked me if I wanted to take the penalty.

“Vini is a Real Madrid legend, he’s a great friend, me and other teammates told him to take it.

“Vini missed? These things can happen, it’s part of football.”
