UK confronts Iran, summons ambassador over ‘destabilising’ activities

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, in a sharp diplomatic move over what it described as Tehran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” both within Britain and internationally.

According to a statement issued on Monday, the action follows recent security developments involving individuals accused of acting on behalf of Iranian intelligence services.

“The summons follows the recent charging of two individuals, one Iranian national and one British-Iranian dual national, under the National Security Act, on suspicion of providing assistance to a foreign intelligence service,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said.

Reaffirming its stance, the UK government warned it would not tolerate threats to national security. “This government will take all measures necessary to protect the British people, including exposing Iran’s reckless and destabilising actions at home and abroad,” the spokesperson added.

The diplomatic escalation comes after two Iranian nationals were arraigned before a London court last week over allegations of espionage activities targeting the Jewish community. Authorities claim the suspects conducted surveillance on potential locations, including a synagogue, allegedly on behalf of Tehran.

Security agencies, including MI5, alongside lawmakers, have repeatedly raised concerns about what they describe as an increasing threat linked to Iranian operations, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Prosecutors identified the accused as Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, a dual Iranian-British citizen, and Alireza Farasati, 22, an Iranian national. Both are facing charges related to alleged contact intended to support a foreign intelligence service between July 9 and August 15 last year.

During court proceedings, prosecutor Louise Attrill stated that the defendants were “suspected of assisting the Iranian intelligence service by conducting hostile surveillance of locations and individuals linked to the Israeli and Jewish community”.

In a related development, British police disclosed that another Iranian man, alongside a Romanian woman, had been charged over an attempted breach of a Royal Navy installation in Scotland.

The pair were apprehended while allegedly trying to gain access to the highly sensitive Faslane naval base, home to the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet and its Trident missile system.

While the Iranian suspect has since been released pending further investigations, Scotland’s prosecution authorities confirmed that there would be “no proceedings” against the Romanian woman, though they noted the option remains open should new evidence emerge.

The incidents have heightened concerns within Britain about potential retaliatory threats linked to its involvement in the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Although the UK has permitted American forces to utilise two of its military bases in support of operations related to the crisis, officials maintain that such involvement remains strictly “defensive.”
