The Russian government insists there is no timeframe for a peace settlement in Ukraine amid reports about President Donald Trump’s push for a truce to be achieved within one month.
“We have tasks, not timeframes. And we are addressing them,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the media on Thursday in Moscow.
On the rhetoric about the supply of nuclear weapons to Ukraine, the top diplomat emphasized that the goal of the West is to make Russia lose.
“They say that Ukraine is winning. Both Russian and English have the expression ‘mistake the wish for reality’…We will wait and see,” Lavrov said.
Moscow issued a stern warning this week after the Foreign Intelligence Service, SVR, claimed that the United Kingdom and France were planning to transfer nuclear arms to Kyiv.
On Thursday, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a Russian overnight attack across eight regions of Ukraine injured dozens of people, including children.
He said critical infrastructure and residential buildings were targeted with about 420 drones and nearly 40 missiles. The strikes hit a gas facility in Poltava and electrical substations in Kyiv and Dnipro.
Zelensky, however, confirmed that most missiles were successfully intercepted “thanks to our partners swiftly sending part of the air defense missiles agreed upon at the recent Ramstein meeting.”
With civilians facing bitterly cold winter months, the Ukrainian leader noted that air defense missiles are needed every day as “Russia continues its attempts to destroy our energy system.”
According to Zelensky, the latest attack followed his call with President Trump. Both leaders spoke on Wednesday, a day after the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion.
Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were in Geneva on Thursday for talks with Ukrainian counterparts led by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
