The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, has said that the emergency environmental action declared by Governor Alex Otti, which led to the clearing of heaps of waste that had covered the streets of Umuahia and Aba, will be sustained, assuring that the clean city policy will not be relaxed.
The Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Umuahia Zone, Catechist Ambrose Jonah, stated this on Tuesday while receiving six waste receptacle bins donated to the agency by an individual.
He said that the sanitary condition of the state before the present administration posed major health risks to Abia residents, adding that the governor’s emergency action, implemented through ASEPA, has restored pollution-free air in cities across the state.
Receiving the six waste bins from an Abia citizen, Sunny Ikea, at the ASEPA headquarters in Umuahia on Tuesday, the Deputy General Manager described the donation as timely, noting that it would help ensure that Abia people continue to breathe cleaner air.
He further stressed that a change in attitude among Abia residents is crucial to sustaining effective waste management in the state.
Speaking before handing over the waste receptacle bins to ASEPA, Oluka Ikea said he was motivated by the visible improvements in environmental conditions across the state, particularly along the Umuahia–Aba corridor.
