Unfair for Muslims to work on Fridays while Sundays remain work-free, says Omokri

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has urged the Federal Government to reconsider Nigeria’s official work schedule in order to allow Muslims observe their Friday prayers without disruption.

In a video posted on his Facebook page on Friday, Omokri argued that the current arrangement, which designates Sunday as a work-free day while maintaining Friday as a full working day, is inequitable. He noted that prior to colonial rule, Fridays were traditionally recognized as a day of rest for Muslims.

“I don’t think it is fair for the Muslim Ummah for us to have Friday as a working day in Nigeria. Originally, before colonialism, it was not like that,” Omokri said.

Proposing an adjustment, Omokri suggested that government offices could close by midday on Fridays to enable Muslim faithful attend Juma’at prayers. He added that working hours could be extended slightly from Monday to Thursday, with offices resuming earlier in the day, to make up for the reduced hours on Fridays.

According to him, such a compromise would not negatively impact national productivity or economic output, as the hours lost on Friday would be compensated across the week.

“The time we are going to lose on Friday we are going to gain it back from Monday to Thursday. So it is not going to affect our productivity as a country and our GDP. And then the Muslim Ummah can close at 12 noon and go for Solat Jumaat,” he explained.

Omokri emphasized that the proposal would help strike a fair balance between religious obligations and Nigeria’s work structure, ensuring inclusivity for both Christians and Muslims.
