The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has rejected the renaming of the institution after late former President Muhammadu Buhari by President Bola Tinubu, and has demanded an immediate reversal.
The union, in a statement on Saturday signed by the Chairman, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, said the renaming of the institution after Buhari was politically motivated and a brazen affront to the university’s legacy, history, and academic integrity.
The statement added that the union was mobilising its congress, veterans, and extended executive council to resist the move by Tinubu to rename the university.
It also warned that the decision amounts to sacrificing the institution’s hard-earned reputation for political patronage, and called for collective resistance, emphasizing that it would respond intellectually and factually, urging members and the public to contribute views ahead of upcoming deliberations.
“This action is not merely shocking; it desecrates the sanctity of our alma mater, especially as the university prepares to mark its 50th anniversary under the widely respected ‘UNIMAID’ identity,” Saidu said.
“We must articulate our adamant opposition and demand the immediate reversal of this ill-conceived and deeply offensive decision,” Saidu added.
