American Congressman, Riley Moore has accused the Nigerian government of complicity in the alleged attacks against Christians in Nigeria, describing the government’s attitude as a shameful silence amid widespread killings and destruction of churches.
Moore who made the accusations while speaking with US podcast host, Mario Nawfal on Monday, said there were incontrovertible evidence of a genocide against Christians in Nigeria while the government continued to ignore the alarming scale of violence.
“The government in Nigeria is complicit in the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Moore who represents West Virginia’s 2nd District in the U.S. Congress, said.
“If I should give some numbers really quick here: there have been 50,000 to 100,000 murdered Christians in Nigeria”.
He also lamented what he described as the global indifference to the ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria and urged the US to intervene.
“My Christian brothers and sisters are being murdered in Nigeria, and this is me raising the alarm in the United States. We have to do something. This is so alarming and concerning.
“It is however sad that the (Bola) Tinubu’s administration has turned a blind eye to the wave of extremist violence across Nigeria, saying the government’s silence only emboldens the perpetrators.
“Three different groups are to blame here: Boko Haram, IS Africa, and Fulani herdsmen. All three are responsible for these atrocities, but the Nigerian government must also be held accountable,” Moore said.
Though the US lawmaker acknowledged Nigeria’s limited progress in combating Boko Haram, he noted that the administration had failed to meet international expectations on protecting vulnerable communities, despite US security assistance.
He therefore called on US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to designate Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ under the Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2025, a classification reserved for nations that enable or tolerate severe violations of religious freedom.
Moore has been one of a number of Republican lawmakers who have continued to urge the President Donald Trump’s administration to take stronger diplomatic action over what they described as mass killings of Christians in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government on the other hand, have also continued to reject claims of a genocide against Christians, insisting that his administration is committed to promoting unity and protecting all religious groups.
