The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its routine updates on Nigeria due to financial constraints stemming from a lapse in U.S. government funding.

A statement posted on the X handle of the US Mission on Sunday said for now, they will no longer post updates on Nigeria on its official social media platforms, noting that the move is part of short-term operational adjustments necessitated by the funding situation.

In the statement, the Mission disclosed that it would halt regular online updates until full operations are restored, noting that only essential information would be shared during the period.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the Mission said.

The statement also clarified concerns by Nigerians who depend on the Mission’s digital platforms for official announcements, particularly those related to travel advisories and consular services.

The Mission reassured the public that critical services would not be entirely affected.

“Passport and visa services would continue to function both within the United States and at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, including Nigeria, subject to how the funding situation unfolds.

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the Mission clarified.

“New public announcements would only resume once full operations are restored, except in situations involving urgent safety or security matters that directly impact the public.

“In the meantime, individuals seeking updates on services, appointments, or operational status have been advised to consult the official U.S. travel website for guidance until normal communication resumes,” it added.
