War: Respect Geneva convention, don’t bomb children – Adeyanju to US, Israel, Iran

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju has joined the growing list of voices urging compliance with international humanitarian laws amid escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Adeyanju called on the United States and Israel to respect the Geneva Conventions, stressing that civilians, including children, hospital patients, and other vulnerable populations must not be targeted during military operations.

Posting on social media, he wrote, “The United States and Israel must respect the Geneva Convention in their war with Iran. Children, hospitals, civil population and vulnerable people must not be targeted.”

His remarks align with broader international appeals for restraint. Recall that the United Nations has repeatedly emphasised the obligation of all parties in armed conflict to distinguish between combatants and civilians and to ensure proportionality in military actions.

The UN has also warned that attacks on hospitals and civilian infrastructure could constitute serious violations of international law.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, on its part, urged all sides to adhere strictly to the rules of war, particularly the protection of medical facilities, humanitarian workers, and displaced populations.

The organisation has highlighted the devastating humanitarian consequences that often follow prolonged military escalation in densely populated areas.

Rights groups have also expressed concern about the potential for regional instability, warning that further escalation could worsen civilian suffering, disrupt access to essential services, and increase displacement across borders.

Diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, with several governments calling for de-escalation and renewed dialogue to prevent a broader regional crisis.

Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies remain focused on ensuring aid access and reinforcing protections for non-combatants caught in the conflict.
