The Federal Government has announced plans to arraign suspects linked to the deadly Yelwata killings in Benue State on Monday, declaring that the prosecution will serve as a deterrent to those threatening Nigeria’s peace and security.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday, confirming that the suspects will be brought before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
According to the statement, the arraignment follows extensive investigations and inter-agency collaboration aimed at building a solid case against those allegedly responsible for the attack.
The statement said the defendants would be arraigned “after a painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies.”
Reaffirming the government’s resolve, the Attorney General’s office assured Nigerians that the prosecution would be pursued diligently to underscore the consequences of violent crimes.
“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to assure Nigerians that justice will be ensured in the matter, to send a strong signal to the enemies of the country acting under any disguise,” the statement said.

It further stressed the commitment of the current administration to safeguarding citizens across the country.
“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the protection of the lives and property of all, as enshrined in the Constitution,” the statement, signed by the AGF’s media aide, Mr. Kamarudeen Ogundele, added.
The planned arraignment is coming months after the brutal attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, one of the deadliest incidents in the state in recent years.
The massacre occurred in June 2025, with violence erupting late on June 13 and spilling into the early hours of June 14. Armed attackers, suspected to be herdsmen, reportedly stormed the community, targeting homes, a local market and a Catholic mission.
During the attack, houses were set ablaze, victims were mutilated, and gunmen reportedly exchanged fire with security operatives. The assault left over 100 people dead and forced an estimated 3,000 residents to flee their homes.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier condemned the killings in strong terms and directed security and justice sector agencies to track down those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted.
Monday’s arraignment, the Federal Government says, is part of that directive and a critical step toward accountability for one of the most horrific episodes of violence in Benue State.
