Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has called on the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to monitor its database while issuing National Identification Numbers, NIN, to citizens and legal residents to verify their identities.
The governor made the call on Tuesday when he received the management team of NIMC’s Yobe State office as part of activities marking this year’s National Identity Day in the state.
Buni, who was represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, emphasised the need for full registration of legal residents to ensure an accurate Nigerian population and enable citizens to access essential services.
He advised the management and staff of the commission to redouble their efforts to ensure Nigeria has an authentic and reliable registration database.
The governor pledged to support the commission with logistics to enable it to visit all 178 political wards of the state in order to register more people.
NIMC State Coordinator, Zaman Yaksha, informed the governor that 16 September of every year is set aside to celebrate and create awareness of the importance of national identification registration.
He said there were recent directives from the Presidency that all Nigerians must be registered with NIMC irrespective of their age.
He appreciated the state government for supporting the commission in the discharge of its duties.
“With the relative peace we have in Yobe, the commission is set to visit all the political wards in 17 local government areas,” the coordinator said.
