Residents of Ja’oji Quarters in Gyadi-Gyadi, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, were thrown into shock early Wednesday morning after the body of a young deaf man was discovered hanging in the neighbourhood.
The incident, which occurred at dawn as residents prepared for the Fajr (early morning) prayer, drew widespread attention and concern within the community.
Eyewitnesses said the body was found in the early hours, prompting immediate alarm among locals.
The Commander of the Gyadi-Gyadi Vigilante Group, Abdulrahman Muhammad, popularly known as Babayo, confirmed that he was alerted shortly after the discovery.
“Immediately we received the report, we contacted the police so that they could take the necessary action,” Babayo said.
The District Head of Gyadi-Gyadi under Darmanawa District, Nura Aliyu Abbas, also confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic and deeply troubling for the community.
According to the district head, the deceased had been battling mental health challenges, which were reportedly linked to a financial dispute.
He explained that the young man had been accused of involvement in a ‘chacha’ transaction, after which money allegedly connected to the matter was recovered from him.
“The young man had been struggling with psychological issues arising from a financial problem. It was a difficult situation for him,” Abbas said.
He urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s behaviour and associations to prevent them from falling into distressing circumstances.
“We call on families to pay attention to the emotional and social wellbeing of their children. The community must also support young people facing mental and life challenges,” he added.
Police are yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
