Youths in Kaduna State on Wednesday staged protests over the ongoing detention of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, calling for his immediate release.

The demonstrators, comprising youths, women and other residents from various communities, gathered at key locations across Kaduna city and parts of Southern Kaduna.

They carried placards bearing messages such as “Free El-Rufai Now” and “Justice for Our Leader,” while chanting songs in support of the former governor.
Some banners also read, “Kaduna Demands Governance, Not Revenge.”

The protest followed the refusal of bail after El-Rufai’s arrest by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Speaking during the protest, Ibrahim Modibbo Sanusi, who identified himself as a leader of the Arewa Youth Movement, described the former governor’s detention as unfair and politically driven.

“We are here to express our dissatisfaction over the continued detention of our leader,” he said.
“We demand his immediate and unconditional release. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.”

Sanusi warned that if the authorities failed to act, the group might intensify its protests, although he said any further action would remain within the law. He also threatened to organise a one-million-man march in Abuja if El-Rufai is not released.

According to him, youths in Southern Kaduna also held a peaceful protest in Kafanchan, the headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area, in support of the former governor.

In Kaduna city, many protesters gathered along the Western Bypass, a busy commercial route.
