The Zamfara State House of Assembly has openly criticised Governor Dauda Lawal over what lawmakers describe as his poor handling of the state’s worsening security situation, calling for the Federal Government to take charge of operations against banditry.
At Tuesday’s plenary, members under Speaker Bashar Gummi painted grim pictures of relentless bandit attacks, accusing the governor of neglecting victims and failing to show empathy through visits, delegations, or relief support.
Moving the motion, Bashir Masama, member representing Bukkuyum North, commended the Federal Government’s efforts but lamented the devastation in his constituency.
“In my area alone, four communities, including Adabka, Zauma, Gwashi and other villages along Mayanchi–Bukkuyum road have suffered the most in the hands of the assailants,” Masama said, adding that residents were fleeing for safety.
Backing the motion, Bashir Zango of Bungudu West listed his worst-hit communities: Gidan Bugaje, Zaman Gida, Kukan Nine and Gidan Dan-inna, saying the areas had become “war zones where anyone who ventured to go there was committing suicide.”

Aliyu Kagara, House Minority Leader representing Talata Mafara South, identified Morai, Bobbo, Makera, Jangebe, Gwaram and Ruwan Gizo as the most terrorised villages in his area.
The lawmakers resolved that the Federal Government should “look away from the state government” and assume total control of security in Zamfara, alleging that the governor’s actions were frustrating security agencies.
They also appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and provide credible intelligence to security operatives.
Ibrahim Bakura, representing Bakura Constituency, said his people were under siege. “Just recently, people of Damri, Dakko, Kwanar Kalgo, Sama, Sabon Garin Damri and Sade Communities were hit by bandits and a large number of their animals were rustled, but the government did not care or sympathise with support talk-less of security reinforcement,” he said.
Amiru Keta of Tsafe West reported daily attacks on his constituents with little or no help from the state, while Faruk Dosara of Maradun I accused the government of “abandoning his people” and called for the House to consider serving the governor with an impeachment notice over “negligence and total abuse of office.”
Nasiru Maru of Maru North condemned alleged maltreatment of villagers who staged a peaceful protest at the Government House.
He asked, “How can a reasonable leader direct political thugs to beat IDPs for staging a peaceful protest demanding the government return them to their homes?”
Reacting, the governor’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Mustafa Jafaru, insisted that security was a Federal Government responsibility.
“I always wonder whenever Governor Dauda is blamed for not ending banditry in Zamfara State. I also look at those who criticise him on security as either ignorant of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or are doing so for selfish reasons,” he said.
Jafaru added, “There are more than 20 states in Nigeria that are facing security challenges, and Zamfara State is one of them, so it will be a welcome development if the Federal Government could come in and solve the problem for the rapid development of the people of Nigeria.”
