Zamfara opposition arrest sparks war of words between APC, PDP

The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Dauda Lawal of using security operatives attached to the Government House to harass and arrest opposition members.

In a statement on Thursday, APC spokesman Yusuf Idris alleged that the governor had repeatedly deployed Government House security personnel to intimidate party members in a bid to weaken the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

He condemned the reported arrest of Bashir Isah Gusau, a social media influencer known as “Ambassador,” who was allegedly picked up on Wednesday night.

Idris claimed Gusau was tracked to a football viewing centre in Gusau, where four men identifying themselves as DSS operatives stormed the venue in a Government House vehicle.

“He was picked up by four individuals who identified themselves as DSS operatives attached to the Government House,” Idris said, adding that the operatives fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd before taking Gusau away.

He further alleged that checks at police stations showed Gusau was not in custody, and his phone lines had been switched off. “We strongly suspect that he is being held at the Government House,” Idris stated, describing the incident as a misuse of power. He warned that the APC would not tolerate continued harassment of its members and called on the Inspector-General of Police and DSS Director-General to intervene.

The APC said it had mobilised lawyers to take legal action if victimisation persisted, urging members to remain calm.

In response, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the allegations as baseless. PDP spokesman Haliru Andi insisted that Governor Lawal had not victimised opposition members, saying he had governed Zamfara as “one united family” since taking office in 2023.

“The APC is only trying to smear the good image of Governor Dauda Lawal because they have nothing negative to say about his leadership qualities,” Andi said. He stressed that the governor had no role in Gusau’s arrest and had never ordered anyone’s detention over political differences.

Andi added that Lawal considered himself governor of all Zamfara residents, not just PDP supporters, and had focused on development since assuming office.

“The people of Zamfara State can attest to the fact that since the governor assumed office in 2023, he has been committed to developing a state that had for years been neglected,” he said.
