2027: Nigerian Govt vows to prosecute anyone tampering with citizens’ data

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, has vowed to prosecute anyone found tampering with people’s data ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Commissioner of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, issued the warning on Saturday when he appeared as a guest in an interview on Channels Television.

The warning came against the backdrop of concerns over data privacy and the safety of voter information in the country.

Olatunji cautioned that the commission is intensifying action to monitor how personal data is being handled by political actors and institutions, especially as election activities gradually begin to gather momentum.

According to him, at a time when political parties and other groups are collecting large volumes of voter-related data, the protection of citizens’ personal information becomes a serious national concern.

“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards, what kind of guardrails they have that they put in place.

“They don’t even know. That’s the truth. Anyone found revealing people’s data will be prosecuted,” he said.
