The Abia State Government has inaugurated the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee for the Abia State Strategy on Accountability, Integrity and Anti-corruption, ABSIAS, with a charge on the members to support the state’s  anti-corruption framework.

Abia State Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, gave the charge on Friday while inaugurating the committee comprising lawyers, journalists, civil servants and members of civil society organizations.

Ojeikere, who was represented by Ukeje Uche Ukpabi, charged the committee members to spearhead the anti-corruption drive.

He mandated the committee members to discharge the responsibility without fear or favour by tracking the progress of projects, identifying bottlenecks and ensuring that projects and programs are implemented in compliance with the state’s anti-corruption framework.

In her speech, the Lead Consultant of Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Program, ROLAC, Professor Ada-Chidi Igbokwe, said the committee is mandated to support the state’s framework on preventing corruption in the public sector.

Igbokwe lamented that several government policies and laws across the country have not been implemented or enforced, resulting to program failures.

Abia State Coordinator of ROLAC, Mr. Peter Omenka, charged the committee members to generate evidence-based reports from anti-corruption units of the ministries, departments and agencies to enable the steering committee to track activities in Abia State MDAs.

He also said that reports from the monitoring and evaluation committee will improve access to justice for women, children and and persons with disabilities and enhance accountability in Abia State.
