The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over what it described as the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) unease ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite its dominant hold on Nigeria’s political landscape.
The opposition party noted that the APC currently controls 31 states and commands about 90 per cent of members in the National Assembly, yet appears unsettled about its electoral future.
Speaking during a television interview, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned what he termed the ruling party’s “growing anxiety” as the next election cycle approaches.
He said the APC’s widespread control of political structures should ordinarily inspire confidence, but suggested that recent developments indicate otherwise.
“Why is a party with 31 governors and about 90 percent of the national assembly still panicking? Why are they still trying to destabilise other opposition parties?” he asked.
Abdullahi argued that the party’s posture reflects doubts about its chances in a credible electoral process.
“In any free and fair election in Nigeria today, there’s no way APC will win. They should be preparing for Tinubu’s win given their overwhelming governance. But they are unsettled because they know in a free and fair election, there is no way they can win. Nigerians are tired of them”, he said.

He further claimed that the APC’s cohesion is largely tied to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the party may struggle to maintain unity after his tenure.
“If you take power out of APC, APC is actually nothing. I know the party well. Post Tinubu, they will unravel quickly, even they would be surprised. He is the glue holding the party together”, he stated.
Abdullahi also described the ruling party as a “special purpose vehicle,” created primarily to secure presidential victories for former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Tinubu, noting that it has largely fulfilled that role.
On his party’s preparations, he disclosed that the ADC is exploring a consensus-based method for selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, describing it as both cost-effective and unifying.
“We are trying as much as possible to adopt the consensus approach because that is the least costly for us,” he said.
He added that “For us, the best case scenario is to be able to engineer consensus and that’s what we are working on.”
While noting that direct primaries remain an option, Abdullahi clarified that the party is no longer considering indirect primaries, in line with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act.
