APC dismisses Atiku’s ADC emergence, says Nigerians will judge Tinubu on performance

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, insisting that the ruling party remains focused on President Bola Tinubu’s performance and delivery of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Reacting to the development on Thursday, the APC described Atiku’s latest presidential bid as another sign of inconsistency and political desperation, maintaining that Nigerians would prioritise governance outcomes, continuity and stability over opposition coalitions ahead of the next general election.

The party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the APC was unshaken by Atiku’s emergence and expressed confidence that voters would assess the Tinubu administration based on achievements rather than political sentiments.

He stated, “Certainly, we are not disturbed that he (Atiku) emerged as a presidential flag bearer. In any case, we are confident Nigerians are going to look at the performance of the party. They are going to look at the performance of the President, and wouldn’t allow sentiment to play any prominent role in their decision-making.

“We are confident Nigerians are going to evaluate the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President alongside the promises made by the party. And we are confident their votes will be in our direction.”

The ruling party further argued that Atiku’s political trajectory raised questions about consistency and commitment to previously agreed political understandings, especially amid ongoing debates surrounding power rotation between the North and South.

“Atiku’s emergence shows inconsistency and failure of integrity,. It shows the failure to stick to agreed terms and stand by promises made. Looking at the sentiment and emotion in the country, everyone will agree that Nigerians will not allow power to shift from the South to the North.”

The APC’s reaction followed Atiku’s victory at the ADC presidential primary, where he defeated former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 presidential election.

While opposition figures and coalition leaders have celebrated Atiku’s emergence as a major political realignment ahead of 2027, the APC maintained that the ruling party remained firmly in control politically and electorally.

The party also suggested that the opposition coalition lacked ideological direction and was being driven largely by dissatisfaction among politicians seeking relevance outside government.

Political observers say the growing exchanges between the APC and opposition parties signal the early intensification of the 2027 presidential contest, with both camps already positioning themselves around governance performance, national unity, economic hardship and the lingering debate over zoning and power rotation.
