The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has advised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take firmer action against individuals causing disruptions to his administration.
Sanusi gave the advice during the traditional post-Sallah visit to the governor in Kano. He said leadership requires both justice and authority, drawing on the Qur’an to illustrate his point.
He said, “In the Holy Qur’an, after Allah mentioned messengers and holy books, He also spoke about iron, which scholars see as a symbol of power and authority. Justice cannot survive without authority and strength.”
The Emir praised the governor for improvements in education, healthcare and welfare programmes, but cautioned him against showing undue respect to individuals he considered undeserving.
According to him, “When you honour a respectable person, they remain loyal to you. But when you honour someone without good character, they become proud and disrespectful.”
Sanusi added that many in Kano now perceive the governor as overly patient in the face of unrest in the state.
He said, “Because of the disorder happening in Kano, people think the governor is too patient and that everyone can behave however they like.”
The Emir urged Yusuf to exercise greater authority in governing the state.
He stated, “My advice to you as a brother is to face this challenge and make people understand that Kano has a government. Anyone who follows the law should live peacefully, but whoever refuses should face the consequences.”
Sanusi also noted that the reaction from the audience suggested broad public support for a firmer approach.
He pledged that the emirate council would continue to support the governor, adding that Kano’s future depends on the success of his administration.
In his response, Governor Yusuf thanked the Emir and the Emirate Council. He also apologised for the cancellation of the Hawan Daushe procession.
The governor explained that the event was called off to prevent violence during the Eid celebrations.
Yusuf said, “I want to assure the Emir and the people of Kano that since Allah made me governor, I have never feared anyone except Allah.”
He added that previous incidents of violence during public outings informed his decision to act cautiously to protect lives and maintain peace.
