Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has publicly called on U.S. President Donald Trump to shift his approach from military threats to technological support in helping Nigeria tackle its multifaceted security challenges.
Kwankwaso’s intervention comes in reaction to recent statements from President Trump, who accused the Nigerian government of overlooking attacks on Christians and threatened to initiate military operations against terrorist elements within the country. These threats, according to reports, were fueled by fresh allegations of “Christian genocide” following Nigeria’s recent public endorsement of a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict and its condemnation of the ongoing killings in Gaza.
In his statement released on Sunday, the former Defence Minister emphasized that Nigeria is a sovereign nation whose security crisis is non-sectarian.
“It is important to emphasise that our country is a sovereign nation whose people face different threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs,” he said.
Kwankwaso advised the U.S. government to channel its considerable influence and resources toward constructive assistance rather than issuing inflammatory remarks that could exacerbate national divisions.

He urged: “The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country.”
Beyond appealing to Washington, the NNPP stalwart also advised the Nigerian government to adopt a more focused and proactive diplomatic strategy to manage its relationship with the U.S. and other global powers. “The Nigerian government should consider appointing special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to engage the American government. Additionally, it is necessary to appoint permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage,” he advised.
Finally, Kwankwaso called for national cohesion during this period of growing international tension, appealing to Nigerians to prioritize solidarity, saying this was a moment to “emphasise unity of belonging over division.” He concluded his statement with: “God bless Nigeria.”
