The Bauchi State Government has approved the immediate suspension of commercial activities in several cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas, citing growing security concerns.

The decision, approved by Governor Bala Mohammed, was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

According to the statement, the affected markets in Alkaleri Local Government Area include Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai-Ari, Gajin Duguri and Maina Ma’aji.

In Bauchi Local Government Area, Liman Katagum market is affected, while in Kirfi Local Government Area, the suspended markets are Lariski, Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi and Boli.

The affected markets in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area include Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo and Zwall.

The government said the measure was taken to address security threats linked to the markets, including cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings, extortion, illegal arms exchange and other criminal activities.

It explained that the markets had increasingly become targets for criminal elements who steal livestock, terrorise traders and disrupt food supply chains, resulting in economic losses and threatening the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

The statement noted that the suspension is temporary and will remain in force until there is a significant improvement in the security situation.

Security agencies have been directed to ensure full compliance with the order, while local government councils and traditional rulers, including emirs, district heads and village heads, have been tasked with sensitising residents and monitoring implementation.
