Benue Assembly speaker wins APC ticket for 2027 election

The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Alfred Emberga, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Makurdii North State Constituency ahead of the 2027 general election.

Announcing the result on Tuesday in Makurdi, the Returning Officer, Mr. Desmond Atov, said Emberga scored the highest number of votes cast in the primary election.

Atov said the speaker polled 7,303 votes to defeat two contestants, Valentine Gbaka, who scored 29 votes, and Stephen Datso, who got 50 votes.

The returning officer declared Emberga winner of the primary and accordingly returned him as the APC candidate.

Speaking to journalists after the declaration, the speaker commended his constituents for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to continue delivering democratic dividends.

He said his achievements over the past three years included the provision of more than 40 boreholes, the construction and renovation of schools, building of churches, and human capital development initiatives.

“It was not an easy task, but with the massive support of my constituents, who believe in me and found me worthy to represent them in 2023, and based on the work they have seen and the efforts I am making, they decided that I should return to the House again to represent them.

“I am excited. It is a moment of joy for me, my family, my constituents, and my supporters at home who have been anxiously waiting for this day,” he said.

The speaker also described the ongoing APC primaries in the state as free, fair and transparent.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the APC in Makurdi Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Dankeji, commended Governor Alia for creating a peaceful atmosphere for successful primaries.

He described the primaries as peaceful and rancour-free.
