President Bola Tinubu has suspended the state of emergency in Rivers State.
The President imposed an emergency rule in Rivers on March 18 following the protracted political crisis in the oil-rich state.
He also suspended Governor Siminilayi Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly for six months over their roles in the crisis, which began in September 2023.
President Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the emergency rule was necessary to arrest the “total paralysis of governance” in Rivers at the time.

He recalled that the conflict between the governor and 27 lawmakers loyal to the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, had left the state without a functioning government during the period.
“It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today. The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the speaker, Martins Amaewhule, will resume work in their offices from 18 September 2025,” Tinubu stated.
