Chelsea reportedly completes Xabi Alonso's first signing

Marco Palestra is reportedly on the verge of becoming a Chelsea player after the Premier League club reached an agreement with Atalanta BC for the highly-rated Italian full-back.

There are multiple reports that Chelsea have beaten Inter Milan to the 21-year-old's signature, with the deal believed to be worth around £47.5 million (€55 million). The transfer is expected to be finalised once the remaining formalities and medical are completed.

Palestra enjoyed a standout campaign on loan at Cagliari Calcio last season, impressing with his defensive consistency and versatility. Capable of playing on both the right and left flanks, he is viewed as a perfect fit for Chelsea's evolving tactical setup under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Palestra came through Atalanta's renowned youth academy before making his senior breakthrough. He enjoyed a standout loan spell at Cagliari Calcio during the 2025-26 season, making 37 Serie A appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

His impressive displays earned him widespread praise, with reports stating he was named Serie A Defender of the Year, while also receiving his first senior call-up for the Italy national football team, where he has already won two caps.

The signing could also have implications for Chelsea's current squad, with reports suggesting Malo Gusto could be allowed to leave amid interest from Manchester City. Chelsea continues to reshape its squad as it prepares for the new season under Alonso.
