An Islamic scholar, Shuaeb Adegbite, has advised political leaders to adopt prophetic teachings in governance and prioritise the greater good over party or personal goals.
Adegbite argued that when political office holders are driven by ethical and spiritual values, they can serve as a powerful tool for promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development.
He stated this while delivering a lecture at the a special Ramadan prayer and Iftar lecture in honour of late Prince Tijani Ade Isiaka and Alhaja Kuburat Isiaka, parents of Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka.
Speaking at the event which was held in Imeko-Afon, the cleric noted that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad highlighted key leadership qualities such as accountability, compassion, and fairness, adding that these values are often lacking in contemporary political systems.
He opined that leaders who exhibit these qualities are better able to put the needs of the populace ahead of their own or their political agendas.
The cleric also cautioned that environments marked by corruption, conflict, and self-interest cannot support real progress, calling on political leaders to embrace values-based strategies that emphasise openness, inclusivity, and public service.
He emphasised the importance of inclusive governance, stressing that listening to all facets of society especially marginalised groups is essential to good leadership and policies based on extensive engagement are more likely to result in sustainable development.
He urged youths to get involved in politics and to do it with honesty, clear sense of purpose, while becoming agents of constructive change driven by moral convictions.
Adegbite also called for increased cooperation between the government, religious organisations, and traditional institutions, arguing that these alliances are crucial for fostering inclusive and sustainable development, enhancing governance, and fostering trust.
In his welcome address, Isiaka stated that the memorial lecture was apt and essential, especially in view of the nation’s current socio-political circumstances.
He explained that the gathering was to seek divine guidance for effective governance in the state in addition to honouring his parents’ memory.
The commissioner emphasised the significance of incorporating moral and spiritual ideals into leadership, pointing out that doing so could aid in resolving enduring societal issues and promoting community cohesion.
