A civil society organisation, The Renewal Group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to institute a public inquiry into allegations of misconduct against the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh.
In a petition dated March 16, 2026, and signed by its Convener, Lai Omotola, the group expressed concern over what it described as recurring allegations of corruption, abuse of office, land grabbing, human rights violations, disregard for court orders, and unlawful demolition of private property.
The organisation warned that failure to urgently address the situation could escalate into a security challenge within Lagos State.
According to the petition, there have been reported cases where armed police personnel, allegedly working alongside suspected thugs, were used to forcibly take over privately owned land in different parts of the state.
It further alleged that property owners who resisted such actions were arrested, arraigned before mobile courts, and subsequently remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
The group also claimed that court orders obtained by affected individuals were frequently disregarded, while attempts to serve legal documents on the police authorities were allegedly obstructed.
“Unless urgent intervention is made in the policing system in Lagos State, the current situation may deteriorate into a crisis of unprecedented scale,” the petition stated.
The organisation added that previous complaints submitted to the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission, and other relevant bodies had not received the desired attention.
Citing a specific incident, the group alleged that an individual currently in detention at Kirikiri was wrongly accused of driving against traffic, insisting that the offence was committed by a police officer who had earlier taken possession of the vehicle.
The Renewal Group further alleged that certain influential figures, including presidential aides, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, a serving senator, and senior officials within the Lagos State Government, were backing the Commissioner. It noted that further details would be provided if a public hearing is convened.
The group, therefore, urged President Tinubu to establish an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the allegations, expressing confidence that such action would help restore public confidence and ensure justice for affected individuals.
