Democracy Day: Solar Energy deployment expanding electricity access in Nigeria – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges are beginning to yield positive results, particularly through the Rural Electrification Agency’s off-grid solar energy projects targeted at underserved communities across the country.

The president made the disclosure in his Democracy Day message on Friday, highlighting key reforms aimed at transforming the nation’s power sector.

Tinubu noted that the implementation of the Electricity Act, which decentralised the electricity sector, would help address longstanding challenges facing power supply in Nigeria.

He also stated that the Presidential Power Sector Task Force is working to bridge the country’s metering gap and resolve legacy debts in the sector estimated at over N4 trillion.

“The Presidential Power Sector Task Force is working hard to reduce the metering deficit and has been authorised to raise a N4 trillion bond to settle verified legacy debts. Alongside these reforms, the REA, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, is successfully ensuring that underserved communities participate fully in the nation’s growth story,” President Tinubu stated.

DAILY POST reports that the federal government has intensified the deployment of solar-powered mini-grids across the country, with more than 1,000 projects being rolled out to improve electricity access in rural and underserved communities.
