A Dutch psychiatrist is facing intense scrutiny following a profile revealing how he administered lethal injections to patients, including teenagers, struggling with mental health conditions. This has ignited a heated debate throughout the Netherlands and Europe. Dr Menno Oosterhoff is a renowned Dutch psychiatrist who specialises in child and adolescent psychiatry. For years, he has assisted his patients not only in addressing their mental health challenges and difficulties, but also in terminating their lives. The practice is entirely lawful. In 2002, Dutch legislators began permitting doctors to perform medically assisted suicide on patients who make "voluntary and well considered" requests to end "unbearable" suffering, if there is no "prospect of improvement" and no "reasonable alternative" to dying. The psychiatrist has attracted widespread attention across the nation, especially following a Dutch public television programme, "Milou's Battle Continues," which chronicled the story of a 17 year old girl, Milou Verhoof who went to Oosterhoff to receive euthanasia.

Milou endured a devastating early life when her brother suffered a near-fatal illness while she was just 11 years old.At 13, she was r@ped, sending her into a spiral of depression, violent self-harm and post-traumatic stress. Following several su!cide attempts, and another psychiatrist who delayed her decision to pursue euthanasia, she turned to Oosterhoff to help her end her life. On the day she passed away, 2 October 2023, Oosterhoff administered the lethal injection in her childhood bedroom. She had her nails done beforehand and had even chosen an evening gown and high heels to be buried in. "Girl, have a good trip," Oosterhoff told Milou in front of her parents. "You've been through so much," he later said, speaking at her funeral. Milou's mother, Mireille Verhoof, has spoken highly of Oosterhoff's care, maintaining it was the correct choice for her teenage daughter and their family. "Because of Dr. Oosterhoff's extremely careful and cautious approach, we as parents trusted that his conclusion-that Milou truly could not go on and that the days were unlivable for her-was the only correct one and confirmed what we as parents had long seen in our child," Verhoof told The Atlantic in an email. However, following the incident in Spain yesterday, March 26, where a 25-year-old Spanish woman who became paralysed after jumping from a fifth floor following a g@ng rape was euthanised, people are now debating whether euthanasia should be allowed. Noelia Castillo Ramos, from Barcelona, d!ed from medically assisted su!cide on Thursday after years of conflict with her father over the decision. Earlier in the week, she gave her final interview to Antena 3, during which she offered a glimpse into her heartbreaking choice (read here). "I have four days left because on the 26 they will perform euthanasia on me," Noelia told the local outlet in Spanish, sparking a debate about medically assisted su!cide in her home country. Castillo became paraplegic in 2024 after sustaining a severe spinal cord injury when she jumped from the fifth floor of a building in a bid to take her own life. Prior to her su!cide attempt, she had reportedly been gang r@ped.The post
