Doctors’ Strike: Lagos federal hospitals record full compliance

2 hours ago 1

Resident doctors in federal government-owned hospitals across Lagos State have fully adhered to the five-day warning strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, on Friday, observed that resident doctors were absent from duty in complete compliance with the directive.

The strike followed the expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, after an earlier 10-day deadline, which lapsed on September 10, failed to yield any resolution. NARD’s demands include the release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, payment of five months’ arrears from the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, as well as outstanding specialist and hazard allowances.

Speaking on the development, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors at LUTH, Dr. Benjamin Uyi, urged the Federal Government to urgently address the issues before the end of the strike to enable doctors to resume work. He emphasised that the demands were overdue and directly tied to the welfare of medical practitioners, which he described as critical to the delivery of quality healthcare.

In a similar vein, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Dr. Babatunde Egberongbe, described the situation as “unfortunate,” lamenting the Federal Government’s tendency to allow disputes in the health sector to escalate into strikes. He warned that persistent poor working conditions were driving many Nigerian doctors to seek opportunities abroad, worsening the shortage of medical professionals in the country.
