The Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has called on political leaders, especially elected officials, to always place the interests of Nigerians above personal considerations.
The Obong made the call on Tuesday when he received a delegation of members of the State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at his palace in Calabar during a courtesy visit.
He noted that peace and development can only thrive where there is mutual respect, dialogue and responsible leadership.
Otu commended the delegation for recognizing the importance of the traditional institution, emphasizing that the palace remains a symbol of unity and cultural heritage for the Efik Kingdom and Cross River State at large.
The Obong further charged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and in a manner that promotes harmony among the people, stressing that traditional institutions will continue to serve as custodians of peace, justice and societal values.
He expressed appreciation for the visit, assuring the party leadership of the palace’s continued support for all efforts geared towards the progress, stability and development of Cross River State.
Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Christopher S. Eta, said the delegation was at the palace to pay homage to the revered throne and deepen the relationship between the party and the traditional institution.
He noted that traditional rulers remain critical stakeholders in society, particularly in fostering peace, stability and community development.
According to him, the visit also provided an opportunity for the party leadership to engage with the palace and better appreciate the role traditional institutions play in politics, governance and electioneering processes.
“We have come to identify with the throne, pay our respects to the palace and acknowledge the important role our traditional institutions continue to play in maintaining peace, unity and stability within our communities.
“Their contributions to the democratic process and overall development of society cannot be overlooked,” the APC chairman stated.
