The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a forceful condemnation of the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, warning the coup plotters of severe consequences and offering the deployment of its regional standby force to aid the government.
In a strong statement released by the ECOWAS Commission on Sunday, the regional body expressed serious concern over the security development and unequivocally rejected the actions of the officers involved.
The Commission described the failed move as unconstitutional and a direct subversion of the will of the people of Benin.
ECOWAS called for strict adherence to the Beninese Constitution and commended the government and the Republican Army for swiftly restoring order in the country following the announcement by the rogue military faction earlier in the day.

The statement issued a stern warning to those involved, stressing that they would face personal accountability for the consequences of their failed operation. The regional body warned that the leaders of the attempted coup would be held individually and collectively responsible for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
Furthermore, ECOWAS pledged its full commitment to supporting the democratically elected government, including the use of force if necessary to defend constitutional order.
The regional body further pledged its support to Benin, noting: “ECOWAS will support the Government and the people in all forms necessary, including the deployment of the regional standby force, to defend the Constitution and the territorial integrity of Benin.”
