A suspected cybercrime fugitive being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has lost his life during a reported gun duel involving security operatives and alleged cult members in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The deceased, identified as Atser Sesugh, was said to be among three suspects earlier apprehended by the EFCC on April 28, 2026, over alleged internet fraud and related offences.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, disclosed that the suspects, James Onuh, Atser Sesugh and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena reportedly escaped from EFCC custody on May 4 before going into hiding.

According to the police spokesperson, operatives acting on intelligence stormed a hideout located behind the Mechanic Village area in Kanshio around 3pm on Thursday after receiving information that the fleeing suspects had been seen in the vicinity.

Edet explained that the operatives allegedly came under attack from suspected cultists who opened fire, resulting in a gun exchange before the assailants fled the scene.

The statement added that while the operatives were withdrawing from the area, Sesugh was discovered lying critically injured by the roadside.

“He was immediately rushed to the Police Cottage Hospital, Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead,” the statement added.

The police image maker further stated that the body has been deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Edet also noted that the Benue State Commissioner of Police has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident, while efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining fugitives.
