Eric Chelle yet to sign new Super Eagles contract as NFF battles other countries to keep coach

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has not yet signed a contract extension with the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, as reported by BBC journalist and pundit Oluwashina Okeleji.

The federation is encountering heightened competition from various African nations eager to attract the Franco-Malian tactician away from Nigeria.

Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, had earlier indicated that an agreement had been reached between the commission and the NFF regarding a new deal for Chelle.

He mentioned that the proposed contract would feature an enhanced salary for Chelle, the federation covering the expenses of his support staff, and an additional responsibility that would involve him overseeing Nigeria’s U23 team in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Despite the public declaration, it has been reported that Chelle has not yet signed the new contract.

Okeleji highlights that the NFF is facing intensified competition from several African national teams and North African clubs that are interested in acquiring the services of the esteemed coach.

Chelle, who took on the role of Super Eagles manager in January 2025, is currently under contract until January 2027. His time in charge has been characterized by a mix of successes and challenges, having led Nigeria to a third-place finish in the latest Africa Cup of Nations, while also missing out on qualification for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign are anticipated to commence soon, the NFF is eager to finalize negotiations and secure Chelle’s long-term commitment.
