Father demands death sentence for killers as slain Abia Nursing student is buried

The body of Miss Wendy Achumba, the slain student of School of Nursing Umuologho Obowo, was on Friday buried at  her father’s compound in Umuokohia, Obingwa LGA of Abia State.

Late Miss Achumba was on May 21, 2026, allegedly raped and murdered at her lodge in Umuologho after she reportedly rejected romantic advances from an indigene of the community.

Speaking at his daughter’s graveside during the interment, the father of the victim, Mr Jerry Achumba, appealed to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, security agencies and the Nigerian judiciary to ensure that any one found responsible for his daughter’s murder is sentenced to death.

Achumba, who lamented that his slain daughter was abused and murdered in cold blood, said that his family’s ultimate demand is the those who murdered Miss Wendy be tried and sentenced to death, according to the law.

“My family will not rest until the person that killed her is tried convicted and executed; my daughter must get justice.

“Don’t say because she has been buried it has ended. No, it has not ended,” the bereaved father said.

In his speech the burial, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, assured the bereaved family that his administration will pursue justice against anyone involved in the murder.

Governor Otti who was represented by his Special Assistant on Students Affairs, Chinedu Nwosu, said the state government would not allow an Abia citizen to be killed in such brutal manner.

“A bright future and a life full of talent was cut short in a brutal act, and the Abia State government will not fold it’s arms in the face of violence against our people.

“We also reaffirm the state government’s commitment to continue to support the family throughout this judicial journey until justice is fully served,” Governor Otti said.

During the event, Students of School of Nursing, Umuologho Obowo, who attended the burial in large numbers, wept profusely as the body of their former colleague was interred.
