Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he declined an offer of appointment from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, choosing instead to step back from active politics and focus on his personal life after decades in public service.
Fayose made the disclosure on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, where he clarified that although he maintains a long-standing friendship with President Tinubu, he has no interest in serving under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“Have you seen me take an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ and I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’ At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible, doing other things that I need to do. I’ve served well, two-time governor. Tomorrow will hold itself,” Fayose said.
The former governor, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasised that his relationship with the President is purely personal and should not be mistaken for political allegiance.
“I’ve not been with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he added.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, Fayose assessed the current political landscape, asserting that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains the only opposition figure with significant national appeal and visibility.
“Tell me, who would defeat APC? The only opposition that I know in Nigeria is Obi. Despite not being in government, he is the only one talking and everywhere. I give it to him,” Fayose stated.
The former governor, known for his outspoken views, explained that his political commentary is driven by principle rather than personal interest.
Fayose, however, declined to directly compare Obi’s current influence with that of former President Goodluck Jonathan or former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, noting only that Obi presently represents the most visible voice of opposition in Nigeria’s political space.
