Five passengers sustained injuries on Monday after a commercial bus reportedly lost its brakes and crashed into the median at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lekki axis of Lagos State.
The accident came less than 24 hours after a separate road mishap in the Obanikoro area of the state, where a driver lost control of his vehicle, killing a woman and an infant.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the crash involved a Mazda commercial bus with registration number KRD 412 XR.
According to Taofiq, the bus was allegedly travelling at high speed when a brake failure occurred, forcing the driver to lose control and veer into the median.
He explained that LASTMA officials promptly responded to the incident, securing the area and coordinating rescue efforts.
Two of the injured passengers, who were in critical condition, were taken to a nearby hospital by concerned members of the public, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service evacuated the remaining three victims, including the driver, for immediate medical attention.
Taofiq added that officers of the Rapid Response Squad provided security support at the scene to prevent further incidents and ensure the smooth evacuation of the injured.
Reacting to the crash, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the increasing number of speed-related accidents on Lagos roads and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.
Bakare-Oki, speaking through Taofiq, cautioned motorists against excessive speeding and the use of poorly maintained vehicles, stressing the need for constant alertness, adherence to speed limits and regular vehicle maintenance.
He urged road users to adopt responsible driving habits and cooperate with traffic authorities, noting that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains essential to reducing avoidable road crashes and enhancing safety across the state.
